Ideas for SE Qld at Christmas?

Postby Nicole on Tue Sep 27, 2005 9:41 pm

I've got almost 2 weeks in Qld over the Christmas period and am looking for ideas for places I can go photograph the local wildlife and birds. Will be staying with the folks on the Sunshine Coast for most of the trip but am thinking about going up to Lamington NP. Any ideas would be appreciated! :)

mmm.. Sunshine Coast.. youve got plenty of places to visit.. if your near Buderim and dont mind a walk.. then i suggest visiting Lindsay Falls.. few nice spots around there to visit.. also.. Borumba and Baroon Pocket Dams.. Montville.. also Gympie Gold Mine and Woodworks Museum (old stuff.. good for fotos.. i always see it going past.. but been a bloody long time since ive had a chance to go).. probably Noosa National Park.. if you also like backwater places.. Kin Kin.. its a small town in the middle of nowhere.. but has some really nice old buildings around... but.. i dont know what your after.. what you looking for?

I've been up there lots of times but only recently spent more time focusing on getting out to take photos. Last time I was up there I went to Noosa, Mapleton and Maleny etc. Also spent a few mornings/afternoons down at Caloundra. I'm particularly interested in birds and wildlife (e.g. kangaroos etc.). Since it will be summer I'd be interested in some good spots for waders (if there are any other birding freaks out there  ) and also any nice wetlands.

Also into macro and did find lots of nice butterflies at one spot around Caloundra last time I was up there but there may be other spots.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. :)

Tripcony Bite in the Pumicestone Passage is the place for wading birds Nicole (in fact the whole of the passage is good). then there are the everglades at the top of the Lakes on the Noosa River. Let me know when you are coming and we should be able to arrange an outing. I have a boat and 4wd and can access the areas I am talking about.

An outing would be great! I was going to ask about a boat but you've answered my question. I looked into renting a boat when I was up in March but ran out of time.

If you have the chance (although it's more the Gold Coast Hinterland) is O'Reilleys .

The birds fly in for a feed and lots of good closeups. It is a bit of a drive but if you're into birds might be worth considering. King Parrots and a number of other varieties.

Have a great time up here!

So I'm guessing that'd be you, Mitedo, Slider, Dargan and Nicole on this pleasure cruise? Any room for a wee slip of a man like me?? (My lens isn't as big as yours so doesn't take up much room!)

I think that a Xmas mini meet is a great idea. There are three of us locally with 4wd vehicles and I am sure that we could arrange a weekend of activities which would interest evryone. I'll get together with Mitedo and Sliderr and we will try and work out a program to put up for discussion.

Perhaps a mini meet:
"Xmas in the Bush" with leg of ham and roast turkey w. cranberry sauce, and fruitcake with vintage port at the end.
It should be nice! I maybe come up and join with you guys!

I just booked airfares to travel away over Xmas and you guys now decide to arrange a minimeet. Its all a conspiracy I tell ya 8)

Anyway, I'm not away that long so shall keep my eyes on the thread. I might have my new long glass by then :D so would be eager to try it out on some wading birds etc.

Canon 20D and a bunch of lovely L glass and a 580EX. Benro tripod. Manfrotto monopod. Lowepro and Crumpler bags. And a pair of Sigma teleconverters, and some Kenko tubes.

Ahem. 4 of us locally with 4WDs, and some of us even have two (but only one on the road  ).

But mine can't do what yours can do though

Birddy,

Yes a few of us up here go 4WDing (that's how I know Slider, Mitedo and Oneputt originally). My 4WD isn't as capable as theirs and mine mainly gets used for light duty stuff thru all the national parks up here - though I have another 4WD that is a project (for about the last 2 years  ) which should be more capable.

I have the Mitsubishi Pajero but soon will be swapped for the X5 3.0d when its lease is expired in the next few months, try to squeeze the juice out of the Mitsubishi before the expiration date.

Ah, good old Biloela. I'll be up there next year for a little while for work probably, could hold our own minimeet. If only there was something to photograph out that way

I'm definitely up for a 4WD Minimeet. I've got a turbo-diesel Prado that is pretty capable but I'm yet to get adventurous enough to warrant diff-lockers and lift kits. Birdy would probably prefer to ride in my brother's X5 3.0 diesel (below) but I can't convince him to get it dirty!

The 4wds were definitely not as luxurious as that in Zambia.

But it sure was fun riding around. Anyway it sounds like a lot of fun! I can't wait to get back up there again.
