Expressions of interest for a Photoshop demo at Birddogs

Postby Matt. K on Mon Jan 10, 2005 9:56 am

Currently thinking of running a demonstration of Photoshop covering all of the tools and their functions. Simple tool presets, simple actions, simple batch processes etc. This would be run from a single PC and projected onto a screen at Birddogs one Saturday morning to be yet nominated. Session would last for about 2 hours and end by demonstrating the enhancement of an image to the printing stage. Image would then be printed for inspection. Please reply via this forum thread if you are interested. The demo would be for those who are curious or contemplating the purchase of Photoshop, and those who already have the program but are at the begginers stage of development. Future workshops and demos would be run at a more advanced level.

Awesome Idea Matt

I tort some one on sat morning a few things to get them over the initial starting stage of PS.
What I have found is once you show people that PS is not all that hard to get your head around, they start to enjoy the pro.

Wish I could be there to give you a hand :(

Cheers

Hi Matt

I'd definitely be interested in this. Right now my Photoshop 'skills' extend to cropping, rotating and some colour balance stuff (done shot by shot).

I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Cheers

Depending upon the date, this could probably be done. We have several miniDVs at our disposal; we just need to man them, plus of course capture the PC's output to video as well.

Would be more than willing to help out on the video front. Have cam, have (limited) ability to edit.
Think I can also learn more about PS too.

Great idea and important to keep the numbers down per session. Even better if we can get the DVD thing happening.

If I can help in any way let me know as I would love to attend one.

Me, I would love to attend. I have photoshop, but don't really have a clue what I am doing.....would love to learn more.

Am going to have to really make up all these saturdays to my man somehow! Oh I know, will let him go play in the drum shop (but only on a Sunday).

Can I just say, this is a fantastic group of people.....the amount of genuine sharing and help is inspiring.......

A recording of the whole thing would be great for the non-Sydney members and others who can't attend.

That Photoshop is powerful medicine, but very tricky :)

After examining the huge range of books available, I am thinking of getting the Photoshop CS Bible. Seems to have a lot of information. And it is "only" about $65

Hi All,
EXCELLENT idea and I for one would be VERY interested, seeing as though I am about to launch my very own photographic (specialising in weddings and portraits) business, just registered my business name and have a domain name ordered. Let me know day/date and I will do my utmost to attend. I also have acess to a high quality panasonic digital video camcorder (3CCD). Let me know if I can help out.

Geoff.

I've been thinking of getting a Ben Wilmore one myself. Not sure of the name...I know he has a few available.

I have a good one by Scott Kelby called "The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers". It's a great hints book, but I would like to know a little more about the why and wherefores.....but for some hints and tips it really is a good book. I got if for $69.95 at Dymocks....so also "inexpensive" in relation to others.

I would love to be there as I am probably only using about 5% of its functionality at the moment... I think I was the one that Raydar taught on Sat...

If I can come, please let me know... I too can provide a data projector if you need one to project from the second PC? I've also got various firewire cables / video cables if needed...

Hi

Re Photoshop books - I have used the Peachpit Press books for a long time as they are very informative and great reference when you forget what to do. I have Peachpit for Photoshop 7, CS, Dreamweaver, Flash, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, Fireworks etc.

Another good series of books for Illustrator and Photoshop are the WOW books.

Hope this ref works - BTW they are a damn sight cheaper than other books.

Looks like we have the interest and we are a go! Just like to stress the point that the session will be a demonstration more than a tutorial. I think you'll get more out of it. I will work at a pace that will enable you to take brief notes as we progress. Getting an overview is perhaps the best way to appreciate the depth and beauty of this huge program. The notes that you take will enable you to explore the features that interest you in more depth at a later date.

I can recommend The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby as being very useful and one of the best available. It gives practical examples of common problems and how to fix them.

Thanks Matt. I have purchased the Photoshop CS Bible (at a reduced $51) because it appears to an extensive reference, quite handy.

I have looked at a couple of Scott Kelby's books, they look good, and with your recommendation, I might just allow the GLW to buy the one you mention for my birthday.

It is also looking like I might be attending your 5 Feb session. I am probably going to be in Sydney that week (waiting on a confirmation), I have emailed Birdy to reserve me a seat, and I just have to tidy up a couple of bits and pieces to make it happen.

GregB,
If you bought that book for discount price of $51.00, that means the book is out of date. Need a new ones

Scott Kelby books are good, I have full range of his books.

Your name is on the list and Matt.K is looking forward to work with you

She wouldn't travel in the cargo hold, she would be in that small section in between Economy Class and Business Class usually referred to as Pussy Class.

I work most Saturdays (the curse of the self employed) :( so it makes it hard to get to a morning meet on time. I think I rocked up at Birdy's at about 12.15pm last Saturday :D

However, I'm also happy to volunteer my DVD burner to help educate the geographically and/or time challenged amongst us.

Cost: One beer next time I'm in Lismore, Cubicle No 42  , Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth, Vancouver, Sacremento, etc,etc :D

Yes, always have stock of Pec*Pad and Eclipse fluid

Cool. Put me down for the outdoor group on the 5th of Feb? Unless there is a plan for this sort of workshop sooner? Edit: Saw the up coming meet on the 15th, but I can't make that. So I'll come to the 5th thing unless there is something similar after the 15th of Jan. BTW, are almost all of the meets on Saturdays? (Just helps to know yay or nay for planning)

You got a deal in Limsmore. Can't speak for the rest :P

I'd be interested in learning more about PS but the thought occurred to me after the last meet that maybe someone might like to consider running a
workshop on unlocking the power and features of the SB800.
I'm stuffed at anything past the basics

For consideration

Yes, we can blend in by doing photoshop indoor and flash outdoor or wait after the photoshop finished and we start the flash section.

I usually skip these messages as they don't usually pertain to me, glad I opened up this one.

Johndec, as the token Canadian here (and sometimes the frustrated token whiner) you have a deal in Vancouver no prob. I'll even take you to a few really cool areas of town.

Both SB 800 workshop and PS workshop would help me out tons. The problem with me reading manuals or listening to my brother is that they seem to speak over my head, and don't come from a photographic specific background. If only I lived in Sydney, Ahh Sydney...
