Somehow I always miss the weekender announcements until it's too late - not this time!

Might actually participate this time.

If my short term memory lasts as long as this weekend I really must try this as well.

I am happy for you to post late as you are one of the repeat offenders. And given the difficulty of the topics this challenge this time, I would appreciate seeing your efforts. As with Louie's difficulties in one of the previous challenges, she posted late because her internet went down. However, I'll leave the final decision with Big Red as the challenge organiser.

Sure thing.
Would you prefer Catholic, Muslim or Hindu???
(I can probably manage Buddhist too, but he's a vegetarian & doesn't qualify as large)

Just home. Will process pix and post in another hour or so.
Also I just happen to know there is another Wannabee who will be taking advantage of the late closing. She joined just so she could take part in this comp. My driving skills affected her too.

I got here at last.
Thanks heaps for keeping the entries open.
I was using a pirate WiFi connection down in Sydney, and for some reason I couldn't ftp images to my host site
The connection was dodgy at best.

Anyway here we are:

My votes
Theme 1: ... Boats
A close call between Paulmac and hrpremier. I'll go with hrpremier because I like the colour BTW BigRed. Why do we all think of bindii and boats together?

Theme 2: ... Feeling Blue
pjs by a mile. The isolation of the figure.. the bottle distanced, but still in reach. The oblivious happy crowds in the background. Even the graininess adds to the mood.

Theme 3: ... Sports
This one is almost too close to call. There are four here.
pjs not in contention. sorry
hrpremier Sports yes, but no action. also too much dead space LHS
andy. Sports yes. a good shot of a fisherman, but let down by missing the end of the rod
tonyt Sports yes. more action than hrpremier on a similar theme, but somehow static. I think the square crop spoils the picture. Maybe go tighter & rectangular
bigred. I relate to this. Been there myself. I cannot really fault it but...
My winner is
paulmac. Not a sport I relate to, but you have captured the concentration of the rider in a way that lets me feel a part of his experience. I love the framing, the lighting and the oblivious figure in the bkg under the rider's thumb.

Theme 4: ... Opposites
pjs again. Perhaps not the best photo technically, but there are layers of opposites here:
black and white
squares against curved graffiti
consideration of others in making a public chessboard vs the lack of consideration in vandalising it
the sharpness of the new writing vs the worn edges of the old tiles and so on

paulmac: I think yours is the best technically, but I see this as a complementary pair rather than opposites. Perhaps I spent too long in the electronics trade.
big red:I like the idea, and I know the ice is there (I've been there too) but I can't really see it in the photo.
tonyt & hrpremier: are you kindred spirits? two photos along the same lines. both are good ideas on the theme, but I think let down by background and lighting.
andy: sorry I don't really see how it fits the theme

Finally a big thank you to big red for organising this again. Keep it up.

My votes for weekender 7:-

Boats
BIGRED Love the concept of using whats around you to get a shot.

Feeling Blue
PAULMAC I enjoy the concept of thinking outside the square and ones immediate link to a subject.

Sports
TONYT After being on a recieving end of a tackle like that I am sure the body knows its not a static tackle. Good action shot althought I agree could be cropped better to suit image

Opposite
PJ"S This image proves sometimes the simply ideas are often the msot effective. Whats more opposite than black or white. Nice image and well done.

Thanks to all who competed. This was my first attempt at a challenge and enjoyed it. You should see me on a more regular basis with such projects

My votes are as follows:

Boats - Andy

Feeling blue - liked the dog, so HR Premier
Mine was a late thought, otherwise it was going to be a pic of me taking a pic of me because I was feeling blue about not being able to find anything feeling blue.

Sports - Paul Mac

Opposites - PJS

Thought the best picture was Paul Mac's pic for sports. Good action shot.

Look forward to the next comp. These topics were challenging so hope the next lot stretch the imagination again.

Boats - HRpremier
Fun colourful image. Been so long since I played with mini boats.... months at least.

Feeling Blue - Paulmac
Well executed shot - nice lighting and nice depth of field.

Sports - paulmac
Nice action shot! Can feel the energy. Shame the passerby passed by.

Opposites - Paulmac
Demonstrates the theme well. Plus who doesn't love wires, adapters and plugs etc.

And thanks for the feedback Mr Darcy - on reflection the missing rod does leave a bit to be desired.

Oh and the brick wall...opposite sides of the same brick wall - simple as that! One in shadow and one in light.....I just liked the look of it.

It is so hard to choose, there are so many good entries and so much variety!!!

Boats: hrpremier
Feeling Blue: Big Red (it is a blue car as well, after all)
Sports: TonyT
Opposites: TonyT (while maybe not technically great, it has the most 'opposites' in it for me - black/ white, big/ small, smooth/ fuzzy)

My votes:

Boats: Big Red. Love the improvisation, particularly when it looks like you were busy this weekend doing "real" work!

Feeling Blue: pjs. Welcome, and well done. Perfectly staged pic!!! Did you have the ISO cranked up? Lots of noise.

Sports: TonyT. I can hear my Dad at footy matches 20+ years ago shouting "Holding the man!"

Opposites: HRPrem. However, it's a Scary Thought to know that you have a mankini in your possession...

Now that most people have voted, I want to show some of my other photos I took for this comp:
http://www.dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=33458
Just so you know I wasn't being lazy just posting one pic. I really did want to capture all the themes in one photo
As it is a just for fun comp, I didn't mind the fact that it would cost me votes.

A few of you have discovered them already, and been very kind in your comments on them.

Also I should come clean and admit that pjs is my better half. I think she's a better photographer too, but this was her first outing with the D70s. She had it set on ISO1600 JPG Small Basic. I'm pretty sure it was accidental, but I know she was worried about running out of "film", so she may have maximised the number of photos rather than the quality. That doesn't explain the ISO1600 though.

And you thought we didn't know the secret identity of pjs! ha I knew all along. :)

Shame with the ISO1600 - in fact it's one thing I usually forget to check between a dark night shooting and the next bright day, as the setting does not display itself obviously on the d70s. I think the graininess did affect my initial impression of some of the shots.

Well this has been fun so far (I even got a vote woohoo!) and I'm already looking forward to the next weekender challenge.
