options for the next challenge

Postby MHD on Mon Nov 01, 2004 1:14 pm

Do people want anonymus entries? this means that there can be nothing about your images that shows that it is yours (so some of us will need to remove comment flags in EXIF headers)

Also, instead of the current system of giving each photo a score do you want to go to a system where you have a limited number of votes to spread around (eg you give one photo 3 point, one 2 and one 1)

any other suggestions welcome... The next challenge will run until the end of november and begin about 2 days after voting closes for the current challenge.

I personaly think anonymus entries are a good idea.

I also think that limiting the number of votes you can give will make you think harder about each image. Plus there are just to many options to chose from this time around.

Yes, I find the current colourful options a bit confusing, probably prefer numbers. Maybe out of five? Over at photoSIG they had some definitions which might be a useful idea. If there is a tie, we could have a vote-off to pick a winner!

Don't really care about anonymity, but I guess it would take away any suggestion of bias. Mind you, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that we are a friendly group of hobbyists.

I must say, however, that the whole thing is a fantastic idea - well done Scott/MHD. :)

I think there is some merit in anonimity, for example in this competition there is a very notable absentee, Birddog. I would hate to think that he is not putting an entry in because he is the one donating the prize. He deserves to have as much fun as the rest of us and if by being anonimous he should happen to win, then that should be ok. He may not get the a prize but he would get the recognition.

Not saying we need to copy exactly, they use Thumbs Up and Thumbs down, always thought that was a bit dodgy. Don't like their particular definitions either, however, this is them.....

Your rating
3 TU Artistically and technically flawless
2 TU High-quality photo yet could be better
1 TU Overall good effort but in need of improvement
1 TD Uninspired and uninteresting
2 TD Seriously and irredeemably flawed
3 TD Offensive or repugnant

I am sure we could come up with a one to five star rating with suitable, simple, non-confrontational definitions. :) Suitable for a lovely bunch such as us.

cheers

Ok this is your final chance to have a say as I will finalise the rules soon

At the moment I propose the following

*Images must have been taken using a D70 Body

*Image that are submitted must not give away who has taken it, whether by subject or in the EXIF tag

*Submitted images must have at lest a minimal set of EXIF tags attached that show information critical to eligibility (date, camera etc...)

* Images posted to the Challange site must conform to the theme and/or rules of the specific challenge

*Images must be TAKEN during the challenge time frame

*The format for the comp will be JPEG with the longest dimension no greater than 1000 pixels

* Unless allowed as part of the specific challenge images may not be edited. Post processing is allowed. Allowed actions include: Levels, unsharp mask, cropping, framing, resizing (to the entry size), white ballance, RAW channel mixing (for RAW to Jpeg conversion), cloning for the purposes of removing dust spots or hotpixels, hue sat adjustments including conversion to black and white.

* Only users who are members of forums.d70users.com and who have more than 5 posts may contribute.

* The theme for the next comp will be decided by the winner of the previous one. He/she has two days to come up with a theme or a "random one" will be decided

*Users may submit one image and may not change their submission after it has been submitted

*Users may NOT talk about who own what images in the challenge UNTIL voting closes

The next challenge will run from when we get a theme until the end of November (7pm November 30th)
Voting will open by 9am December the first and close at 9am dec 3rd

Sounds good to me. May be you should turn the thread into a poll, make it easier to get result.
