Postby biggerry on Thu Mar 03, 2011 7:52 pm

Anyone heading to the Airshow this year? I am sure it will be same stuff different year with all the usual orgs and defence people out for a jolly.

I am heading down on the saturday and will be in Melbourne for the whole day, if anyones kicking around the city that night and whats to hook up let me know, I have a late flight back and was planning to do a city sunset, on that topic, any good locations within walking distance from the city?

I would be happy to meet up with you.
You can get some nice views of the city around Ethihad Stadium (docklands), and a view of the sunset on the other side of the wharf.

PM me - we could work out some details.

I'll keep an eye out for you Russell.

I'll be there with the kids, along with the 500,000 others... :)

I'd have to guess that we'll be pretty worn out for Sat night, though.

I'll have one spare seat in my car if anyone needs a lift from/to the city...

I'm up for $105 in entrance fees already, and it's $110 for a family, so it'd make it cheaper for us all if someone came with me!

PMs sent.

Well, since your all dying to know what it was like :rotfl2:

It was a good day, typical Avalon airshow, started off at a crisp 8 degrees when I got to Melbourne then got cooked at the show and then back to a nice chill in the evening. Aircraft-wise, same old old... to be honest its the same aircarft but less every year, no F111's! I also reckon a trip to Temora would be just as good if not better from a flying display point of view, its a more intimate venue and basically all the aircraft (excluding the heavies) worth watching are there.

A special thanks to Russell (rflower) and his son Josh, with whom I met up with after the airshow and gave me a ride from the show to the city and then to the airport, not to mention the guided tour of the docklands and some of the nice photography spots.

I have not yet had a chance to look thru the images from the w/e but am looking forward to the next trip to Melbourne.

I think they are either singapores or the italians, but don't quote me on that...

surenj wrote:Looks like you got your thrills from this one. Brings back memories from the Williamstown airshow.

lol, yeah - I reckon williamtown was better, but realistically, once ya seen one show they are pretty much all the same.

have only dabbled with teh video briefly, but man it looks sh$t hot with the 105mm @ 2.5 !

Focus, there are all these new fangled features like 3d focus which I got no idea about at this point. But the spot focus and continous focus is very nice, the extra focus points compared to the D80 are excellent too.

Standby for gerrys review on the D7000 - its coming :rotfl2:

Hey it was great to meet you, and show you some of the sights.

I got one keeper from the airshow ... We got there (to the cheap seats) quite late and after stuffing around and using the wrong settings ... I managed this one.

Image

Josh (my 10 year old son) with a D50 and 18-135 got a great shot of the 4 Hornets (?) all lined up. I will put that one up in the next few days.

is this cropped at all?

if not, I would try and rotate the image slightly to get a more diagonal composition of the aircraft in the frame, basically nose lookign at one corner and the tail at the opposite.

good perspective on this too, one you cannot get from teh paid seats :rotfl2:

Hey guys

I purposely spent more time wandering around the ground displays than I did at the runway line, so I didn't end up with 5000 blue sky photos... and hey, the kids enjoyed it too!

Lots of people with big-ass lenses there...

It was going to be a challenge to nominate anywhere to meet up with you all, so I didn't bother! Another time, Gerry.

These were my faves of the few I took: (Click through for larger if you'd like)

I was very surprised to see the Roulettes doing lots of their show towards and over the crowd, as opposed to along the runway.
Image

And the Southern Knights flying their Harvards put on a great display.

Great shots Paul. Not keen on the saturation in the colours and the slightly unearthly blue in the sky but these are very nice images all the same

I figured that would be the case Paul - tehre was a crapload of peeps there!

The roulettes are typically the only ones I have ever seen (in aus) to overfly the crowd, if you look at some of teh famous airshow crashes you will see why only a few select will fly over a crowd - in this case I reckon its a testament to the skill/reliability of the roulettes

you nailed teh composition on that 3rd one...perfect!

this was the best compo I got from that run...
