Sharpness been effected?

This was after my tripod fell, I just want someone to see if its still fine.. The lens has some superficial marks and the zoom extension is a little stiff around 18 to 25mm but other than that it seems fine...


Taken straight out of the camera, resized and framed. I know the boats arent in focus but thats cause the tripod moves and I have to hold it with my hand yes yes, Ill get a new one soon

perhaps the lens produced a better image than before it fell
and you already had a special mark on your lens so you'll know it your lens if it gone into someone hands.

Kris, I agree with Birddog the photo looks great with nice composition. I think it is great.

Re the tripod, I am smiling at the thought of you holding the tripod for 30 seconds (read it from the exif) while waiting for the shutter to close. It would seem like forever. As a temporary measure to extend the usefulness of your tripod, try hanging some weight (a full camera bag, sandbag, 20kg dumbell, etc) from the centre column to give it more stability


ps another reasons the boats may not be in focus is ... the boats move, especially in a 30 sec exposure. Luckily buildings don't move.

What I'm trying to say: the lens wasn't sharp enough prior to the accident and it's sharper after cos some internal elements has been adjust correctly after the fall and it got hurt.

Glen, you've seen the tripod ?? It has no center column or a position to hang anything. Its poles are no thicker than my finger and the head at the top wobbles, thats the worst bit

Yes, time to get rid of it Kris. Try not to catch Birddog's lens lust, it can't be permanently cured As a temporary measure before you get the big gun, you could pick up a Manfrotto, I think its called tabletop ballhead, which Gary has or the similar style available from outdoor shops for about $30, not sure of the Manfrotto price but Gary said inexpensive (checked $65 at Vanbar). This would also be a useful addition afterwards when you get your big gun. Disadvantage - only 150mm high so a different perspective but would have worked for your Lavender Bay shot.

Kris, you can use the tripod on anything, tabletop, balcony railing (if wide enough), wharf post, car roof, etc. http://www.Vanbar.com.au have them or try Paddy Pallin, Mountain Equipment, etc for an outdoors one. With the outdoor one I have you can velcro it to a branch or lamp post which obviously gives adjustable height. This is no replacement for a real tripod, but they are cheap enough that you could pick one up in the city tomorrow and get to enjoy it while choosing the big one. It is also useful afterwards and small enough that you can always have it in the bag

Have you seen a thread I posted this morning US$3500.00 for five hours?
If you have a good completed gears then you can make that figure and then you can buy a mansion right in the harbour, by the mean time, just lodge an application with Housing Dept. to get a cheap shelter!
