He owned the cab and a couple of others. Probably making considerably more than an engineer.

I gather that he had been unable to get a gig in his own field. He left Afghanistan to escape the trouble quite a while ago. He would like to return to Afghanistan, but his wife (who has lived in Australia most of her life) wouldn't have any of it. And we noted that Afghani wives, like Australian wives, must be obeyed. :D
