Sail on one of 4 tall ships Sun 13 Mar 05

Postby stubbsy on Wed Jan 05, 2005 2:55 pm

I'm fixated on tall ships at the moment. Thought this might be a great idea for a group outing.

Regardless, I plan to book on this -> http://www.australianheritagefleet.com.au/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?key=SE002&preadd=action

In a nutsehll. Flat price of $193 per person. Price includes morning tea, boxed lunch and afternoon tea. Departs Pyrmont 10:30 am returns 5:00 pm

Thought some others might also be interested since all 4 Tall ships are sailing at sea together for the day. Should get lots of pics.

I'm thinking the Svanen or Windeward Bound will be best as they're smaller.

Anyone else interested?
Peter

I'm getting warm on that idea. To be able to photograph the other tall ships on the open sea sounds very attractive. I'll watch this thread.

Damn I knew there was something more to it :(

On a serious note, the thing that excites me about this is that all 4 ships are sailing "in company" and so, like Matt K. mentions, this gives an opportunity to get shots of the other 3 ships on the open sea. Shame it doesn't cost less, but I still think it's reasonable for the opportunity. (however being single I don't have to justify it to anyone except myself)

Especially if you have a 200 - 400 VR on the end of your D70.

Do you know: on those ships in the open sea they are not stable, especially wind and choppy sea.
To take photo from and to those ship, there're many challenges, like to sitting on the small fixed wing or rotary aircraft.
VR works well here!

Woody, Birddog

Now you're getting me really excited

Trouble is I can't even justify the expense of the big VR to myself (70-120 is better, but I've got that range on non VR)

Hey, in the last couple posts, you mentioned, you're single and you don't have justify with anyone, we're all married men and older and are reaching retired age. Sure is: you can justify yourself to join a VR club!

birddog

I'm thinking of coming down to Sydney Saturday to your place for the mini meet @ 8:00 (now taking pics of 1 tall ship Fri PM so my Sat is free). Hopefully you won't tempt me too much while I'm there.

All I want is a tripod & a head and a 12-24 lens and........

Cheers

Stubbsy, make that lots and lots of $100 bills. Birddog's place has more highend photographic gear than most so called photo shops in Aus. Prepare to enter Alladin's Cave...

I agree with Mudder.
What a buzz ...
I'm investigating travel from Canberra, booking and paying for accommodation and etc for two.
And I also think what a great photo opportunity, get a wide angle lens !!!
This could be a little sensation.

I've sailed on the Svanen, it's a nice ship. Went on a 2 day trip run by Rotary. Went down to Jervis Bay. I was sick as a dog on the way down, but fine on the way back.

Coming back into Sydney harbour, I was fortunate enough to be one of those up the top of the main mast putting one of the big square sails away. So we are sitting up there, a big distance from the water (or harder wooden deck) with nothing more than a rope beneath our bums and our feet hooked into another. Was amazing and would have been great for a photo or two.

Sydney Harbour

Postby christiand on Sun Jan 16, 2005 9:46 pm

I rang the people to find out where the ships are going.
They are going to sail around around Sydney Harbour.
After looking at the overall costs including 2 or 3 nights acommodation for two people, I thought, well, what If I just showed up for when they leave and perhaps get an all day ferry ticket for $13.
Who knows, I might get to see those ships and even take photos.
Also another thought crossed my mind:
meet the Sydneyers on Saturday at Birddog's place, have a photo shoot on Sunday morning including the tall ships and continue venturing through the Rocks ?

Your thoughts are welcome.

Good initiative. I just assumed they'd go out to sea. That gives it a whole new perspective. Seems strange they're just sailing 4 ships around the harbour. I'm inclined to agree with what you say. Strange thing is the blurb says "will sail together at sea". Sydney harbour isn't really what I'd call sea!

I just rang them myself to confirm this and they are definitely going out into the open sea. While they'll be in the harbour to start with the purpose is not to sail the harbour but to go out to sea.

The person I spoke to was a little puzzled you were told they were only sailing around the harbour. One possibility is they got the dates wrong as they DO sail the harbour only on other dates.

The answer that I got was not really satisfying.
I couldn't see myself on one of those ships sailing the harbour for lots of hours.

I've just booked myself onto this. I'm going on the Svanen since it looks the least nice ship & that way I get pics of the better looking ones from it :)

Also it has less people as its maximum number so less crowded.

Hopefully I won't be the only D70 user sailing, but if I am you'll certainly see my shots when I've been.

Oh and I reconfirmed when booking they are DEFINITELY going out to sea.

Hi Stubbsy,

I also booked myself onto the Svanen.
I did it over the Internet and got a reference number, so that should be fine.

Looking forward to the trip.

Great. There'll be two of us so if one of us loses their D70 overboard there'll be someone to take shots of the owner jumping in after it :D

But seriously...

Look forward to meeting you and I'm quite excited about doing this (hope I don't get seasick :( )

Hi Stubbsy,

I'm really looking forward to it.
I hope that I'm going to be on the Svanen.
The confirmation e-mail seems to confirm that.
Now I have to sort out logistics such as accommodation.
Stubbsy, are you planning to meet Birddog on Saturday ?
How are you organising that weekend ?
