Two purchases from HK

Postby MCWB on Thu Sep 22, 2005 9:07 pm

On my way home from my European adventure, I stopped in Hong Kong for a bit over 3 days, in which time I made two excellent purchases.

One of these purchases is optically superb, very sharp and it gives great colours. It also fits well, and Gladys loves it.

The other purchase is merely a lens. ;)

Oh, and she said yes. :)

I know my product protography sucks, sorry!

Gladys must be a wonderful woman - she has seen evidence of your lust at close quarters and STILL agreed to marry you!

Thanks guys, thought some of my 'online family' would like to know! :)

Both very happy, yes, as are our parents. She wasn't with me in HK, in fact the only people that knew I was there were my best mate and her Aunty and Uncle who I was staying with in HK (who were a great help when buying the ring, it's SO much easier when you have a Cantonese-speaker with you-usually I use Gladys ;)). I wanted it to be as much of a surprise as possible (as it was hardly unexpected), and the less people that knew, the less people could stuff that up. That worked briliantly too, although I had to lie a bit much hehe. ;) The smile on her face was worth it though. :D

Congrats Trent!!! That is fantastic news matey fantastic! I wonder who will get married first? You and Gladys or me and Bel? We've been engaged for just over a year and don't have a date set yet, but we're working on it! The ring looks great - can't wait to see it IRL.

Then there's the 17-55DX - I've been able to get out on portrait shoots now and use it...and yes I'm a BIG fan!! You will like it very much! Well done matey...well done!

Trent

Congrats to both you and Gladys. I'm impressed with the fact that you've managed to subtly convey the concept to Gladys that you can buy lenses and still have money for the other things in life. An auspicious start to the next stage in your life together.

Congratulations.
Get used to the concept of at least doubling the price of new lenses when considering them from now on. One has to consider the counterbalance spousal expenditure.
I'm sure you will be extremely happy. Married life will be pretty good too.

The 17-55 is a beauty. Great for capturing the sparkle in a girl's eyes. Granted, the diamond ring is better for creating that sparkle first.

Cheers

First of all, thanks to everyone for their kind wishes, very much appreciated!

You'll enjoy in the long run anyway!

I actually bought the 17-55 DX after the ring, but I know what you mean, you know me too well. And you're right, I have a pretty 'complete kit' now: most other things are in the 'want' rather than 'need' category, which is the right position to be in for me now.

The 17-55 DX was kind-of an impulse buy, well the decision to actually purchase it was anyway (I already knew I wanted it). I got it partly as a reward because I was very happy with my ring shopping (and why shouldn't I get something too  ), partly because I shot a wedding in France and realised that I'd like it later on this year for another wedding I'll be at, partly because it's going to be more difficult to buy in the future and partly because it was just damn cheap (A$1600)!

Vince: Not so much unfortunately, as I'll be mostly over at Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute these days.

Andrew: I only just realised what your new avatar is... because I took the same photo.

Geoff: 1 year without a setting date is impressive, it seems the first thing everyone asks you is "When is it?"... even my mum did before I'd asked Gladys the question haha.

Congratulations on both accounts :) Should organise a mini meet with the wedding as the project of the day ;) I'm pretty sure it'll be a pretty sweet deal for everyone in terms of opportunities for photos, etc.

17-55 is my next next lust...after this 20mm, it'll be the 70-200 :S *sigh*

Congrats...Wish you both the best.

...Now speaking from experience.....(our wedding is next week)...Dont set a date because as soon as you do the money pours into this bottomless pit called "The wedding day". It means you have nothing left for any gear....

Trent,

Sincere congratulations from Chryssine and me to you and Gladys :D

Based on our experience, marry the girl ASAP... we were engaged for over 2 years and we fought continuously... after marriage, there's not been too many cross words over 43 years   PS Chryssine wants to know if you are still her honorary son :!: :?:
