POTW 12 April 2011

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

POTW 12 April 2011

Postby stubbsy on Tue Apr 12, 2011 8:48 pm

This weeks POTW is actually TWO pictures of the week. For me the first image below was the early front runner the first time I saw it. Every image I saw after this fell just short for me until I saw the second image I've chosen. So I had a dilemma. Two images at very different ends of the spectrum yet both grab me by the ears and say "Look at this".

So my solution: It's a tie - but the best, most impressive bit is both images are the work of the same photographer.

Great work Gerry.

For this first one I've said a little in the original post, post but I'll say some of that again here. The evenly exposed "natural" light of the image together with the long exposure effect on the water adds a lovely surreal quality for me. This is further enhanced by the saturated, but not over the top colours. Compositionally the person in the middle distance keeps the eye nicely anchored in the image. Interestingly Gerry makes this comment about the image "I am not a big fan of the picture to be honest, however it is growing on me, that will fade by the end of the weekend though." What would he know

This second image (original post HERE) is very different to a lot of what we see here. While macro shots pop up from time to time (noticeably some excellent fungi shots from Colin) they rarely impact me as strongly as this one does. It's got fantastically solid composition, awesome DOF (always a challenge in a macro shot) and so much bloody detail I spent considerable time lingering over the beauty of the ugly creature (and yes I know that sounds contradictory)

Congrats on POTW. Excellent colours in the first; I like the rainbow-ish flare. As for the second, well, yes, there is beauty in ugliness...I think.

Well done.
