Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. PotW May 24, 2011

Most of you will know how I feel about kids' photos.

But most of you will also know how I feel about a good photo, and when it comes to a clash of my likes and dislikes, a good photo will always win out over my personal prejudices.

GeoffM has been toiling away at his 365 project: a noble cause, and one I wish I had the discipline to partake in. And the time, truth be told.

This week he posted a few images, including this one of his daughter, on a swing.

Image

Grabbing an image like this is very difficult. You have a moving subject. You want the subject in focus. You also want to have a somewhat shallow depth of field, so that your point of focus for the image is your primary subject, and to throw any distracting background objects out of focus.

You need to have a somewhat fast shutter speed to stop the movement.

getting the exposure right would be a nice bonus, too.

In this image - original thread here - Geoff has managed to get all of this right, and more.

Great work, Geoff.

Excellent photo Geoff, and well chosen Gary. Photographing kids well is just about as hard a thing in photography as you can get, (with the exception of capturing lightning and dragon flies...).

You've done well and worthy POTW image.

Ozi.

Whoohooo thankyou Gary for selecting my image especially as you have confessed to an aversion to kid pictures!

It is an image I am proud of and one which I shall be printing to hang on the wall.

The shot was taken with the 70-200f2.8 VR on my D90, 1/500s, f3.2, 90mm, ISO200.

Thanks all for your kind comments.
