PotW 17/7/2012

Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. PotW 17/7/2012

Postby sirhc55 on Tue Jul 17, 2012 4:09 pm

This week I have chosen a photograph that encompasses two of my own passions.

One, it is a flower and two, the graduation of colour gives the photo an almost ethereal appearance.

To photograph petals on a flower is very difficult (DoF) but this weeks PotW winner, Trevor, has done a magnificent job.

Well done Trevor

Well, this is a pleasant surprise!

I've had the week from hell : wife in hospital; wife returns from hospital but severely restricted because of a back injury; called up for jury service; exempted from jury service to attend funeral; computer starts doing strange things leading me to attempt reinstallation of Win7; installation fails; turns out that SSD is on the fritz; buy and install new SSD then reinstall Win7; find that I have photo of the week.

Pick the best part of that week!

Thanks everybody.

I'm still smiling, just not as widely as before.

I don’t normally post in a POTW that I have instigated but I do have to say, again, that the ethereal look of this image is timeless and just so beautiful.

Trevor I hope your wife is getting better and that the sun activity will soon calm down so that all of our electronics start to behave again.

A bit about the image.

Natural light - wanted to see what the D800 could do. Exposure was 1/5sec @ f22 using Nikkor 105mm Micro on a tripod, fired with remote. Didn't use mirror up.
Even at f22 I had little DOF. I focussed towards the back petals of the front flower, because direct focus on the front flower gave a totally blurred rear flower (also vice versa).
I was using AutoISO which dialled in 1600 - the maximum I had set. The result in terms of noise is outstanding for that speed.

A couple of reasons for lack of sharpness noticed by some:
- my focus point being around mid-depth
- diffraction resulting from such a small aperture

I must say that I am happy with the result. The colour reproduction is excellent, that's just how those flowers looked. This camera's ability in low light is a marvel.
