PotW June 25 2013

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

PotW June 25 2013

Selecting the Picture of the week is always a rewarding experience. It's a task that I relish, because it gives me another excuse to re-look at the images that have been posted here over the last few days.

Images that are often quite special in one way or another.

This week's image is one that displays a lot of technical in the photographer. Making an image of a bird in flight is quite challenging: they move quickly, and often in an unpredictable manner. Simply having the bird in the viewfinder is enough of a challenge, but to then be able to follow it in flight, and maintain focus, is a feat to be envied.

Sylvia has done all that and more with this week's PotW. She's managed to keep the aperture fairly wide, resulting in a beautifully soft background, all the while having the subject beautifully isolated here.

Congratulations Sylvia for what must have been a hard image to capture. Your other image of the same bird is also impressive, if not quite as sharp. Taken together you wonder how these things stay up in the air :D

At least old members week - recent appearance from Mj as well!

Hi Glen!

Edit: Sorry - bad manners on my part. A worthy image Sylvia, well selected by another old member.

Sylvia, I think you are too modest with the 'lucky' comments, birds in flight are pretty tricky to catch.

Thanks for the welcome back guys, nice to be back.

Well done Sylvia, great shot. This is a very exacting hobby/business/pastime and shooting birds in flight is up there as one of the most difficult things to do. But not as difficult as dragonflies!!
