1D MK III

Postby Kris on Wed Jul 25, 2007 8:35 am

Chance to buy US stock here for $4999 - if I buy a Mack warranty here for it, is that risky given the MK III's AF issues? Ive read alot have issues but alot dont. Certainly the copy I used at B&H yesterday didnt have any...

Thoughts?

isnt it closer to $5600?

$4499 + 7.5% NY Sales Tax (is it 7.5%?) / .87c maybe a fraction higher? $5559 AUD you would have a better idea with your recent 85L purchase, and i guess you wont declare it on your way back? if you did thats what 10% that would comes to over 6k, foto reisel in sydney have them on pre-order for $5950 with aus warranty, up to you but i would think buying here would be a better option, thats what i am doing (dad is going to the US soon)

I believe the jury is still out on the ratio of 1DmkIII that have focus issues and those that don't.

There's a pretty good discussion here: http://www.naturescapes.net/phpBB2/view ... p?t=103425 which seems a lot less emotive that the one on DPReview.

Those that are seeing the issues still seem to be pretty happy with the other features of the camera, but that may also be justifying to themselves spending US$4500 on a broken camera.

Kris wrote:Certainly the copy I used at B&H yesterday didnt have any...

Based on the descriptions of the AF problems, I think you'd have a very hard time verifying whether the one you were playing with had issues or not. Most of the problems occur with moving subjects against a busy background and usually in hot and bright conditions.

If you do get a bad one, and you only discover once you get back to Oz, you will have a hard time returning it for "repair", assuming Canon agree to repair them.

yes as ATJ said, the issues are said to be in full sun, tracking a moving subject.

if you have not already have a look at robgalbraith.com

my personal view on the matter is there really does seem to be something that is wrong with the camera and i dont think it is a QC issue. rob seems to be telling it 'how it is'... those who disagree seem to be trying to justify their $4500 purchase.

if it was my $$$, i would just wait. you'll kick yourself later if you are sitting in aus with a cam you are not all that happy with...

yet there is a user on POTN who has tested in greater temperatures with faster moving subjetcs and has seen no issues, its a bit of a mystery to me.

I don't think that the camera is broken, more likely it is software related, although only doing it in the heat makes no sense.

It appears the firmware upgrade doesn't fix the issues.

An interesting comment taken from the long thread on NSN (linked above):
E.J. Peiker wrote:As I stated early on in this thread, I believe that the problem is due to a component that is designed or manufactured too close to the edge causing an unintended electrical response within the AF system. Since all electronic components are within a distribution, some cameras will have the problem nearly all the time, some nearly none of the time but all have a component that is too close to the edge. Also, all electronic components change their electrical characteristics over time. So, if my theory is correct, cameras that don't have the problem today could develop it in the future and thus my statement that all cameras are affected. I also believe that firmware can not fix this completely - I believe strongly that this is a hardware issue and specifically an electronic component within the AF system. I have seen this sort of thing too many times in 25 years in the semiconductor industry. Finally, I think Canon will fix this quietly and may have already done so in cameras rolling off the production line by simply going with a different tolerance component or tweaking the internal voltages some or some other fix that they will likely never tell anybody about.

Just my opinion for what its worth.

By my maths, 546561-501001 = 45,560. That's a lot of cameras with a "software" related problem.

Since you've got the answer already, I'll say that we don't sell second hand cameras at PC. :)
