Sell 17-55 IS for 16-35 mkII?

Postby devilla101 on Wed Oct 31, 2007 3:44 pm

Hey guys, need opinion on the above.

I carry 2 bodies with me 5D/70-200 IS and 30D/17-55 IS for weddings. Since most of the time I use the 30D as my main camera, I really should be using the 5D.

I was thinking of selling above and get the 16-35 as I find the FOV of the 17-55 is not wide enough.

What do you guys reckon?

I doubt you will get a great deal for the 17-55 - what were you expecting for it?

I have no experience with the 17-55 IS but by all acounts the lens performs very well - just limited with the EFS-only.

This is perhaps a slightly different alternative - but have you considered the 24-70 L 2.8 - Swapping the lenses around - the 70-200 on the 30D and the 24-70 on the 5D?

The 24-70 on the FF body will give you a marginally wider FOV than the 16-35 on the 1.6x crop 30D. I guess it also gives you a lot more flexibility/reach with less of a gap between the configurations.

Bugger, these decisions are hard :) Good luck.

Have you tried 16mm on a full frame?? It is really really wide!!

Sometimes you don't want so many things to get into the frame too... :P

But the 16-35 is really nice to couple with the 5D :)

Geez your telling me :)

Yip: Yeah I can only imagine its like looking through the Sigma 10-20 from the last meet.

Hmmm, A lot of people suggested I switch to the 24-70 L but I already have a Sigma version.

Might sell the Sigma and the Canon 17-55mm then.

hmmmm decisions decisions

If you want to meet up I'd be happy to bring my 24-70 and 16-35 along for you to play with. I work in the CBD so it's easy for me to do a wander along Circular Quay at lunchtime or something.

Thanks for the offer Moz, unfortunately I don't work in the City anymore. I've had a play with Trieus 24-70 lens a while back and it sure is purrrty.

Seems the general consensus is to get the 24-70 so I guess that's what i'll be doing in the near future. I'll wait for the aussie $ to hopefully climb higher. Also maybe pick up the Canon 10-22 but we'll see.

Thanks for the input everyone

Not too beat up an old subject, but I just came back from Philippines and managed to grab myself a 16-35 mk II for $1435 from 'd.zone Canon' Bargain!! They were having a lens clearout sale and they discounted it further for about $30-$40 when I paid via Credit Card.

Interestingly enough the 24-70L was nearly the same price.

So problem solved!!
