I have some dosh - lens upgrade

Postby Smudge on Mon Feb 11, 2008 10:07 pm

Hi kiddo's,

Hope you are all doing well.

I now have a job....Time to upgrade my lens. Have around $1500.00, may be able to stretch this a little.

I mainly take motorsport pics, so I was looking at this lens Sigma 80-400mm f4.5-5.6 APO DG EX OS.

I have the crappy canon 75-300mm that comes in the kit, but it just aint fast enough and certainly doesnt have the range I want.

Any thoughts, has anyone got anything to sell???

Not much use for motor sports unless you are suicidal... but the 24-70 fits right into that budget (if you squint) :D

Range vs speed vs quality vs price.

You can't have them all for $1500.

Range - the sigma you have quioted or the Bigma (50-500)...

Speed - Canon f2.8 70-200, or a longer fast prime.

Quality - Canon again - probably a 300mm prime but more $.

Price.....

Just bear in mind that the Sigma is a slower lens (aperture) so you will be working harder to get the shots potentially.

Good luck.

What about Canon a 70-200 F2.8 (non IS because you're shooting sports) plus a 1.4 extender?

Hi guys,

Sorry for not responding..I havent had any replies come through my mailbox.

Not to worry.

Great suggestions and I looked at the 50-500 bigma, but I just didnt like the quality of the lens.

I presume there is a 70-300mm canon zoom lens that I can put an extender on?????

Not that will work very well with an extender.

+1 for lensrental.com.au - I have rented a few lenses of Christian (the owner) for weddings - he is a top bloke.
