Well, i picked it up this morning, put it on charge, left for the work xmas party and returned in the failing light to have a play with it.

first impressions are that this sure feels like a pro camera, and i feel very comfortable shooting at iso 3200. something i would have never even considered before. i just can't wait to take it to some shows and see how it goes with stage lighting.

I suggest you pick up a 1D series body, that is a pro camera. The 5D feels the same as the 30/40/50D.

Oh don't get me started on that elitist crap. I get enough of that from CPS. The 5D can be a "pro" camera. The 5DmkII, 40D, and 50D can all be "pro". Even the D30 was a pro camera in its day.
I'm a professional photographer, and the 1-series cameras don't suit my work. The 40D and 5DmkII do.

Sure, Canon market the 1-series as being at a different level, and they are. They're very nice cameras. But they're not the only "pro" cameras around.

<eyes glaze over and then clear>
Sorry, was I saying something?

I do think the 40D/50D/5DmkII are a step up from the 30D/5D in terms of body design and "feel". I'm not sure what body photoaffinity is moving up from, but the 5DmkII probably does feel like a different class of device.

There's NO doubt the 1-series is a huge step up from the other bodies. I have a 40D (up from a 10D) and shot a 5D last week - nothing goes close to the 1-series.

Michael is referring to the 5D II, which for most of us is a new body. Just how much like the old body, or how much unlike the old body, or how much unlike other bodies we have is really yet to be experienced by most of us.

Me? I think we should all just go out and get ourselves some old A1 bodies and be done with it.

Old tech doesn't deserve to live!

To me, not being a long-time 5D shooter, the mkI and the mkII felt very similar, but I couldn't say if the release on the mkII is as horrid as on the mkI.

Woo hoo! Mine arrived (as a kit) at the store today!
I'm after a body (I already have the 24-105/4) and my dealer kindly split the kit for me (he needed another 24-105 for his photography business).
It (and some batteries!) should be in my hands on Wednesday!

Still waiting on news of the Eg-D focussing screens, and still waiting for Kirk or RRS to start shipping L-plates (fingers crossed I can get one before New Years, but time is running out for that).

For what it's worth, Michaels have been at least slightly useful: I just picked up the spare LP-E6 batteries I ordered last week. I haven't seen or heard of these at any other stores yet.

Cool. Same price I paid (although obviously I didn't have to pay shipping).

Thanks for the link - I know at least one person who will be happy to hear about it.

Amusing to see the picture though: that's an LP-E4. ;)

It reminds me of an EN-EL4a, just like the BP-511/512 reminds me of an EN-EL3e. Do manufacturers share the same casings for their batteries?

Sort of. You will find there are minor variances in the casing design that will prevent a Canon battery from fitting into a Nikon body. The differences are very minor ... a notch here, a bump there, and from a functionality PoV, totally unneccessary.

Call it marketing.

The kit lens with this is the EF 24-105mm/4 L IS USM. It's shipped from Canon in an integrated lens/body box (it's not just bundled by the stores).

I paid AU$3800 for the body.

3 days out from Christmas I got an email from ddphotographics they apparently had 10 body only 5D mkII's in stock. Rang up they wanted $4585 each! Told them that was above rrp - spat back they paid a premium $ for the stock hence the price increase. Heard from a friend that teds had stock called them 4199inc. picked it up 2 days before Christmas. I'm registered for gst so I can claim my gst credits back on it. Happy to have it for Christmas and my first wedding in JAn for 09

And it's also more expensive than the price I can supply these for through Poon.

That's also why I wanted to know what y'all are paying out there in retailland: I see little point in paying more for something, and then not not getting the local warranty either.

While the retail prices remain lower than grey, that's where you should be shopping. The GST issue is an important one to bear in mind too, for those to whom it applies.

- spat back they paid a premium $ for the stock

Which is not your concern. Poon has said that the 5D II is difficult to get in HKG, and as with all of his stock, if he feels the price is getting too high, he doesn't get it.
