I am also waiting to see how the 15-85mm performs on this. I don't like the [major] distortion and CA that the 17-85 has.

Previews seems to indicate that the combo performs well..

Otherwise 24-105 is nice...why couldn't they make a 15-85 f4 USM. Would be worth $1500 at least. Could have sold them like hot cakes?

It's too rich for me. I'm glad I got the 50D when I did. I've got a long way to go before I could justify a new body.

Thanks Doctor, ISO 6400 looks great for my purposes... I think I am sold!!!! now to gather the funds....

Actually I will need to try this out at least in the shop... much heavier than my current gear... I may not like that.

I cant comment on the weight, i had the 85 1.2 on the front so it was a rather weighty piece of glass... But im sold, as much as i want one for Classic Adelaide, Ill be pushing to have the funds by then, but that might not be such a bad thing, end up with one out of the second batch (or 3rd or something) and see if they can sort out the supposed focus issues...

Agree. It's often good to wait out the initial batches unless you are in a super hurry. [which I am not!]

A good friend purchased a 7D locally this week and I had a play with it a few days ago. First impressions? Built like the proverbial Panzer, 8fps stutters like the proverbial Bren gun, and clean images at higher ISO seems very possible. Image quality doesn't seem a lot different to my 40D.

I didn't get to try out the wireless flash control. The only down side that I could see was that it seemed a whole lot more complex to operate than the 40D/50D line of cameras. Nikon has always had the advantage in camera body ergonomics, IMHO. The learning curve on this camera will be steeper.

In summary, I can see why the 7D is flying off the shelves all round the world, or so it seems. Will I upgrade? At this time, no.

Anyone in DSLRusers-land that can give some hands on comment about using the 7D? Would like to hear some opinions from any owners out there. Thanks.

I had a play with it + 50mm 1.2 for about 10 minutes during one of the meets.

Very solidly built, button layout is similar to 40D, Nice LCD, bright viewfinder.

I couldn't test the wireless flash commander, or the focus at the time.

Negatives: Didn't like the placement of the ON-OFF button! It's on the left of the camera where the mode dial is situated. I prefer to turn the camera on-off while holding with the right hand and bringing it up to my eye to take a photo.

I agree about the On/Off but then again on the 40/50D the placement sucks as well. Can someone clear up the wireless flash commander for me, does it mean it is like the D300 (pop up flash acts like a commander) or is it just the ability to control your 580 (in commander mode) via a camera menu?

Cameron, I believe it's very similar to the D300 commander. It can do manual or ettl flash adjustments upto 3 groups including the popup (off, contributing to exposure).
Makes the S2E2 somewhat redundant (not sure about HSS or rear curtain shutter though)

its identical to the nikon system, so yes its full control of your strobes...line of sight issues withstanding.

These online video tutorials go a long way to explaining the new AF options, flash control and show the new menu layout:

Have only had mine for a few days and Im still learning a LOT of new things but so far Im impressed. Need to experiment more but I now think I have a handle on how to (hopefully) get the best out of this thing.
