50d firmware versions question

Postby johnmc on Tue Jan 26, 2010 10:23 am

I recently purchased a Canon 50d and wanted to ensure that it was running the most recent firmware - It would seem the most recent version from canon is v1.0.7

However when I view the firmware version on my camera it states v 3.2.7 4B(1e)

My concern is that 'upgrading' from 3.2.7 to 1.0.7 seems a little bit wrong!?

Can you in fact 'brick' a 50d by putting the wrong version of firmware on it?

Thanks in advance

John

The official latest firmware can be found at http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos50d/firmware.html.

You load the .FIR file onto a fresh CF card, put it in the camera and scroll down the menus to select the firmware revision. The camera will then prompt you for confirmation before proceeding, and will tell you the firmware version that is currently installed (e.g. "do you want to updated from x.x.x to 1.0.7?").
I wouldn't be surprised if the number reported at that menu is 1.0.x, not 3.x.x...

Try it for yourself and see. Either way you shouldn't brick your camera (unless you interrupt the installation half-way through: make sure you have a fresh battery).

Thanks for the feedback Dave,

I almost got this far but hesitated, and backed out, when the screen read "do you want to update from 3.2.7 to 1.0.7" (or words to that effect) as it did seem a bit strange.

Guess I'll just give it a shot (fingers crossed).

Cheers,

John

With the strange numbers that you're seeing, I'd be inclined to wait a da, and give Canon a call first thing in the morning. They should be able to explain the strange numbers that you're seeing.

Hi, as a fellow 50D owner I'd appreciate knowing the outcome as it's been a while since I checked for updates

Well not really sure that was worth the effort :(

Apart from telling me the benefits of upgrading to the latest (in their opinion 1.0.6) firmware and suggesting I take it to the Canon service centre to have this done  no explanation of the strange firmware numbers (and almost total avoidance of the subject)

ah well... fingers crossed here goes with a firmware "upgrade" to 1.0.7... (sans Canon service centre in Clayton)

John,

IMHO, they totally avoided the question you were asking. Not a really satisfactory state of affairs. I hope it goes well for you.

Deb, what version does you camera say that you have?

Completely agree Gary - seemed to get put into the "too hard basket" pretty quickly...

Firmware 1.0.7 installed now and all operating as it should be, so no harm done.

John,

A good outcome in the end, but not exactly a good customer experience.
