Hey Deb,

Never seen one but apparently it's a very expensive piece of plastic shell which houses primo glass producing stellar quality photos.

This might be useful

yes I had read some reviews but wondered if anyone had actually had it or used it - I have an opportunity to upgrade for a pretty fair price so was looking for justification

I have to say that I have used this lens a bit, Marcus has had more time with it. Buy it, you wont be disappointed! Canon finally has a 100mm Macro that is not bested by the Tamron 90mm

Hey Deb :D

Yeah thanks for the mentioning Cam. The 100mm f2.8L IS USM Macro is an insanely sharp lens. I want one due to the AF speed as well as image quality compared to that of the 100mm f2.8 Macro USM. I've found that this lens is by far the sharpest lens I've come across by Canon ( well the copy i was using, which was only JUST serviced by the Pro team at Canon, that might have been why). I actually want this particular lens to replace the want of the 135 f2L USM... i know it sounds weird, but in comparison for portraits this lens is awesome for what it is, even if you have the 70-200 f2.8L IS USM II, it does not compare to this lens.

In comparison to the non L series, not only is the AF speed significantly faster, but the IS is far more advanced and the optics are much much better than the non-L. The colors, detail and punchy images are absolutely stunning. There's something about the build that screams quality to me, in the image and in the build. When I first picked it up for the weekend use, my jaw dropped, knees weak and went wow.

If you're considering purchasing the Tamron, I wouldn't do it. I've had fun with the Tamron 90mm, but it doesn't compare, the 100mm f2.8 canon NON L focuses tack quicker making it more versatile as a unit, the tamron also had slightly soft edges, but that might have been the copy i was using.

The only problems that i found with it was the AF back focused alot, might have been my camera though..
The other thing was, the shadows go quick. I had to reduce contrast in picture styles to compensate for this, don't know how to explain as such, but if you shoot JPG like I do best bet is to reduce contrast with this lens.

CA is under control wide open, can't complain as much as I regularly do ( and Cameron knows I'm quite the pixel peeper). Can't complain :D

Hope this helps you in your decision, so far the cheapest I've seen it for is
http://d-d-photographics.com.au/canonlenses.htm#100mm28

Even the overseas market is $3 more + import tax.

By the sounds of it, you're going primes :D 85mm f1.2L now this.. haha my what lovely taste in lenses you have. :D

OK I'm reassured - always nice to hear from someone you 'sort of know' not just trust what could be sponsored reviews ...
consider it a done deal
...only thing is I'll need to get the adaptor so macro ring flash is compatiable ..but a small burden

I've found that continious light for macro works best :D hehe so much easier especially with heavy light fall-off. :D

But it's a great lens, and a bargain for even the retail price.

I have a feeling that we are getting a really unbiased view here.    BTW Marcus, glad to have you here. It's nice to get a Canon expert to comment on things.

it's mine ...all mine !! so too late for negative comments now as I won't listen

RE Macro ring flash ...yes I like nice even light best but not always avaliable , especially when the lens may only be a few inches from the subject...but I bought the ring flash a couple of years back / great 2nd hand price and love to use it for poitriats ..(nice rings on eyes, great for having more light on one side than the other either offsetting or creating shadows and it supports the 580's nicely as a slave) ...so I'm glad they make a converter so I don't have to part with it

Have fun ...I will be

Deb, you will have a ball with this lens. The original was excellent and this has some nice features when hand holding. Look forward to seeing your first pics with it.

I dont know if Marcus is truly a "unsponsored" reviewer....after all he gets all that glass to play with direct from within Canon

Great to have you around Marcus
