Finally, Canon have announced their entry into the MILC field, with the EOS M.

The new EOS M will launch with two specially designed new lenses – the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens and the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM ultra compact pancake lens – along with the ability to use the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses through the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M.

The EOS M has been developed alongside the new EOS 650D digital SLR camera and shares many components, including the 18 megapixel APS-C sensor with on-chip phase detection AF and the DiG!C 5 image processor. The removal of the mirrorbox assembly and viewfinder allows the camera to be around 50% lighter and significantly smaller2 while enabling the same high level of image quality.

I'm waiting on pricing information; expected release is around October.

It certainly looks interesting...and at 799 (1000 locally would be my guess - bloody AUSTRALIA TAX) it isnt that much more than the Olympus EP3/OMD or the Sony NEX. If it shares the 18MP CMOS with the 650D then I would safely assume that it will outdo both the OMD and NEX7...possibly even the NEX5N in terms of IQ.

Given how long canon took, I expected canon to come out with something significant.

That's my thoughts too.

I'm thinking that this is basically a chopped 650, which in one sense is good, but it also concerns me in terms of what shortcuts Canon may have taken, and what the outcomes of those shortcuts might be.

This is my thoughts exactly.....hence I think it is interesting...but am reluctant to say it is nice...I guess my definition for "interesting" (want to find out more) and "nice" (uncertain about camera, ie not going to rush out to order) differs to how Chris defines these terms.

What I meant by nice is I'm sure it will work well and produce great images.

I guess what I mean by uninteresting is that this is a camera that for all intents and purposes exists already, this is just the canon variant. They didn't do anything particularly special with it. It's just another mirrorless camera. It may very well have just been an update to an existing canon product line up. If this is the best they could come up with, why did it take so long ?

The only company that seems to be able to innovate these days is fuji.

As a SECONDARY function. This is first and foremost a miniature video camera (good luck keeping it steady); that's how they plan to market it.

For the Japanese market, it's a funky brewster camera. [Note the white color!] Then it's a different market and culture there. :mrgreen:

And that's why I put the 80-400 onto the V1.

I do admit that it is less enticing to put on a 70-200/100-400 on the Canon EVIL because there is no more of a crop factor than a 7D/XXD/XXXD/XXXXD whereas the Nikon 1 is a 2.7x crop so the just for kicks reasoning comes into play.

As an Olympus-only shooter these days, I'll have to disagree with this statement.

I lent my OM-D to an ABC cameraman for a week. He didn't want to give it back, and he only used it for video.

Back to the Canon: It may be useful to Canon users as a compact backup body but seriously compromised by having no viewfinder of any kind.
