Brisbane 30/5-3/6

Postby aim54x on Tue May 28, 2013 12:03 pm

I will be in Brisbane over the weekend, most likely without a computer (but with phone and tablet) and was wondering if anyone has any photographic suggestions? I am going to be restricted to public transport and am staying in Anzac Square.

I am also planning to be travelling light (esp photographic gear) and am planning on taking my Nikon 1 system and Klasse W (35mm film with a fixed 28mm f/2.8). I am going to be packing the tripod though. Should I reconsider my photographic options? Katrina will either be bringing her D7000 or E-PM1 (not certain yet).

Thoughts, photographic suggestions and local knowledge is greatly appreciated!!

No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.

Hi Cameron

You are staying in the centre of the city, so there is plenty of architectural photography available. Anzac Square has lots of monuments too.

The Mall and Southbank are great for people watching and street photography. If you go to Southbank the Museum and Art Gallery are right there.

A ride on the CityCat will give you opportunities up and down the river, although this may not suit the gear you are bringing.

Have fun!

Storey Bridge at night is fun, plus a night stroll to Kangaroo point gives some sensational views of the burgeoning Brisbane skyline.

Trevor, do you mean I need something wider? I will have 27-300 covered between the lenses I have for the Nikon 1 system.

Sorry - didn't realise that you had this flexibility. It's the telephoto end you would need on the Cat.

I was there a couple of weeks ago for a few days. I took only the XE1 with 18-55 (but purchased both the XF14 and XF35 while there (b'day pressie to myself). As Trevor suggests, architecture and street photography at every turn. Powerhouse museum is worth a visit as are the Botanic Gardens and Roma Street Parklands. There is also the GOMA, QPAC, Museum etc. Oh and the big wheel on Southbank which I rode at dusk and probably the best time for the combination of lighting (natural and artificial). I took a ride on the City Cat, tickets are timed i.e. 2 hours rather than to a destination. There is also a free 'hop on hop off' ferry (small red vessel) but they do not go as far as the City Cat. A few images from my visit:

Thanks...yes I have recently expanded (possibly against better judgement) my Nikon 1 kit so I now have: 10mm f/2.8 (27mm), 18.5mm f/1.8 (50mm), 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR (27-81mm), 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 VR (81-297mm). I still question my sanity about this move, but the lenses got a work out over the weekend and I have been pretty happy so far. I am worried about low light performance with this system though.

I should also ask about public transport, is there an all encompassing ticket (similar to MyKi in Melbourne) or am I going to end up buying tickets all the time. Are there any ticketing restrictions (ie no tickets sold on buses 7am-7pm in the CBD - ala Sydney)?

Thank you for the suggestions, the images look wonderful...now you have me considering grabbing some heavy gear after all....
