Sydney Harbour Walk - Part 2

Postby stubbsy on Wed Apr 25, 2007 1:57 pm

Continuing on from Part 1 of this walk I'm organising part 2 of the DSLR Users Sydney Harbour walks to take place on Saturday 12th May 2007

A large PDF map of the complete harbour circle walk is HERE and I also have explanatory historical notes on the full walk (I can't find the online version at present)

This walk is from Wollstonecraft railway station to Greenwich ferry wharf. Start time is 9 am from Wollstonecraft railway station. You can catch a North Shore line train from Wynyard at 8:34 or 8:41 am and both trains arrive before 9 am. Approximate walk time is 3 hours.

From Wollstonecraft station we'll head along the Gadyan track around Berry Island Reserve where there are views of the harbour and the Gore Cove oil terminal as well as a significant aboriginal location with rock art and exposed shell middens. Then it's on to Greenwich where we'll go to the Vista St lookout for views back over the city, pass the Shell oil depot and on to the harbour lookout at Mann's Point. Then it's on to Greenwich ferry wharf and return home with an opportunity to take in the harbour views on the way to Circular Quay. There are ferries leaving Greenwich for Circular Quay at 11:56 and 12:56.

Note: This is a fairly gentle walk requiring only a moderate level of fitness. The steepest part is up the steps to the two lookouts at each end of the trip

Please indicate expressions of interest below.

Sounds great Peter. At this stage, I should be free on that day. The last walk was a lot of fun, even including Keith's encounter with the road :)

Does this require another moderate amount of hill slope and small sized bushes to climb??

Either way, its in my calendar now... :D

Looking forward to it, hopefully its not too cold by that day. :P

Judging by the last walk, Stubbsy's "gentle" probably translates to "you don't need to be an experienced mountaineer, but it helps"

I would suggest it's probably a little too strenuous for Alicia - especially if it is a warm day.

Thanks Peter - she now has a girly function on in the city in the morning, leaving me free, so I can count myself in  (possibility of premature labour not withstanding - I mean Alicia, not me).

What a bunch of wooses

If it buckets down it won't happen - I'll be ensuring you all have my mobile number so we can make a last minute call if needed. The forecast at the moment is "A few showers 14-18". Along the way we should be able to seek shelter from the odd drop of rain so if it's just overcast it will still happen.

Hope you guys have a great day. I was hoping to be able to get there but this was schedule on our camping weekend - so we are heading south  .

We wouldn't want to get wet anyway so Donna and I are going kayaking :)

Enjoy the day guys. Cheers, Mick :) :) :)

Oh the joys of forecasting the weather. As of now the forecast is "Mostly fine. Min: 14 Max: 21" and Sunday & Monday are also Mostly Fine so I'd say the showers look like coming across into Friday instead of Saturday. Fingers crossed.

If you haven't given me your mobile number or want mine please PM me so we can get in touch if needed on Saturday.

Anyone care to do a double car pool?

ie: we park at Greenwich. You pick us up and park at Wollstonecraft. When the walk is over, we drop you back off at Wollstonecraft. Or vice versa.

Just for those who want to head off without having to take a ferry to circular quay etc etc :)

Pat and I are also hoping for good weather. We are shooting a wedding on Saturday, so will be unable to attend. Third time lucky perhaps. Hope you all have fun. :)

Well the weather looks good for the day as Trieu has said. As of now the forecast is for Fine. Partly cloudy. City: Min: 14 Max: 21 So we should have a pleasant day. Please remember to bring sunscreen a hat and water and sensible walking shoes.

We'll meet at 9 am at the corner of Shirley Rd and Telopea St which is opposite the railway overpass at the railway station. If you are catching the train from Central it is almost opposite the top of the stairs when you exit from the platform. Details of train times etc are in the first post in this thread.

See you there.

Wendell, the walk is expected to finish at about 12pm at Greenwich wharf, and some people maybe catching a ferry back to Circular Quay? I maybe in that group, although I doubt I will be hanging around the city for long.

Guess not :)

I suppose we'll park at Wollstonecraft, then somehow get back there by train or something.

Peter, do you have any alternative route for people who needs to bail out early the day?

I need to be back to Town Hall by 1pm latest. Not sure if we are able to catch up with the ferry and get back in time. Just an alternative way back will be good to know ;)

Yip, I plan on being back in Circular Quay by midday cause I need to shot off afterwards also, so I will be on the first ferry back.

I can't stay too long this time... first ferry back will suit me :)

Damn - missed it, as I seem to miss most of these! The only consolation is that I missed it by a good couple of months, rather than a couple of days - that would have hurt more somehow :D

Is there going to be a Part 3?

Am going to put a 'watch' on this to make sure it doesn't happen again!
