5D Mk 3

Postby gstark on Fri Mar 02, 2012 9:56 am

That's the rumour for today, at any rate.

There's a Canon function around lunchtime, and we should know more once the tweets start from there.

In the meantime, perhaps this might keep you entertained.

5D Mk 3

I think it's very safe to say it's a 5D MkIII after all the leaked photos of the event setups with all the 5D MkIII posters and banners.

Is this like a delayed response to the D700?? The only new thing is the Digic5 = faster frame rate. [ignoring video for a moment]

looks pretty solid to me. vast improvement on AF which was needed of course and potentially takes this into the "jack of all trades" category like the d700.

looks like a good upgrade, more of an evolution from the Mk II. So it doesn't have a big upgrade on pixels, big deal really. Probably addresses a lot of issues that people were complaining about.

As a Nikon guy, this means that potentially there will be more buyers for the D800 as Canon pixel envy-ers move from Canon to Nikon, it will make it harder for me to get my D800 when I am ready for it.

Good deals for those wanting second-hand gear.

so canonrumors had this thing pegged quite a while ago. spec wise on paper, for me personally, its everything a d800 should have been.

The Verge has a hands-on preview, sadly no sample shots.

They also have a D4 in-depth preview – with ISO 12,800 sample shots!

Cheers

Only 6fps? I thought you wanted much more than that.

And apparently the local pricing - body only - will be in the $4300 realm. Still interested?

The basic feelings that I'm getting from the journos at the launch event is that Canon have dropped the ball.

We'll see in time, but also note that the 5D2 remains in production.

I don't think I will sell my MKii and upgrade to this. If it had an inbuilt espresso machine maybe, but otherwise, no.

5D Mk 3

Postby Wink on Fri Mar 02, 2012 5:26 pm

Yep. I think it's a very small upgrade considering how long the 5D MkII has been alive. The upgrades are good and needed, but I think they could've done a lot more. The D800 offered a lot more new features than this new 5D does. It sounds like much better value.

Ted's say $4399 here. US is $3499. Figure that one out... You can actually get it in the US with a 24-105L for $100 less than the body alone will go for here.

The picture style preview button and the rate button seem like pretty useless features on a camera to me, but I guess someone must have wanted it.

CameraPro in Brisbane have it for $3865, body only.

Like any camera announced, some love it, some don't. Interesting pricing strategy.

6fps is reasonable. Haven't asked for more than that. I think those journos are wrong. Canons only issue here appears to be the pricing. This is a massive af upgrade, so not sure why people think its minor tweaks.

I guess that's kinda fair especially if it's going to be clean at 25600. Otherwise, it's just AF; and video 720p out: NO Raw output; headphones etc etc.
For a still photog, you'd feel a little shortchanged with these minor improvements.

I guess the D700 has had this sort of fast AF for yonks. It took them 5 years to upgrade the AF. But then, 5D was the 'game changer'.

Looking very very good at 3200. 6400 very good. Would be great to see a head to head review 5d2 vs 5d3 vs D700 vs D800. I am not convinced that there is much in the ISO performance. Actually D800 would be a noisemonster.

They can change the guts all they want, the ergonomics (or lack thereof) still remains the same by the looks of it from the first 5D.

try before you buy - fyi

at DCW.

From 5pm-8pm this Thursday and 9am-5pm Friday, we will have Canon Specialists and demo cameras at all 3 stores to show you the new model and answer any questions you may have. Supported by Canon Professional Services, the specialists will have a range of Canon lenses, including telephotos, fisheyes and tilt-shift. Bring your memory card and your favourite Canon lens and you'll be able to take sample shots in store to see what all the fuss is about! This is a great opportunity for you to test drive the new model.

I am seriously considering a boots'n'all jump into M4/3s territory with the OM-D, and ditching my Canon gear. Of course, the outstanding Fuji X10 will be the backup. Come to think of it, maybe the X10 will be the main camera and the Olympus as backup...
