Quotes of the day
A dog will look up on you; a cat will look down on you; however, a pig will see you eye to eye and know it has found an equal. ~ Churchill

The Empire State Building was the world's tallest building until the first tower of the World Trade Center was topped out in 1970. The building is now the seventh-tallest building in New York City, the ninth-tallest completed skyscraper in the United States, and the 54th-tallest in the world. I took the picture from the rooftop of the Rockefeller Centre.

This delicious Portuguese egg custard tart pastry or pastéis de nata are pastries inspired by an original recipe called Pastéis de Belém, which was created before the 18th century by Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon (parish of Saint Mary of Bethlehem). Monasteries and convents used large quantities of egg-whites for starching friars and nuns' habits and used the leftover egg yolks to make and sell cakes and pastries.

As I walked along the peer in Darwin I saw the man with his fishing rod in almost a U shape struggling against something putting a good fight under the sea water. Soon the catch was moving to and fro furiously and gasping on the jetty. The young man’s efforts and skill had been rewarded as he posed proudly before my camera.

As I took this picture, I could not help but thinking of the beauty and fragility of life. Like the butterfly that goes from flower to flower we might think we are free to do as we want and the world is our oyster. The sad reality is that we are chained and bound to the conditions of our environment, our own biology and the very society we live in.

It is said a picture, this one was taken in New York, is worth a thousand words. Well, this picture has words in it and tells a story. It made me reflect on valuing and protecting what I still have – health.

As we sailed away from Scotland, the Scottish Piper played traditional music. The evidence of bagpipes in Scotland goes back to the 15th century. It is believed that bagpipes were carried at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, but there is little evidence.

I took this picture from my balcony. Brisbane celebrated Riverfire last night. As a new unit building will be built in front of our view blocking us from seeing the city, I took the opportunity to take a few photos. An unusual warm evening for this time of the year and drinks and a meal enjoying the light spectacle.

Lupinus, commonly known as lupin, lupine or regionally bluebonnet, is a plant in the legume family Fabaceae. The family includes over 199 species. They are widely cultivated, both as a food source and as ornamental plants, but are invasive to some areas. I found the flower in the picture in Akureyri’s garden in Iceland.

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the many landmarks of New York. It connects Manhattan and Brooklyn over the East River. It was also the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its opening in May 24, 1883. It has a span of 486.3 m and a deck of 38.7 m above the water.

It was known as the Valley of the Fallen, now Valle de Cuelgamuros. This basilica was built under granite rock by prisoners of war (Spanish Civil War) on the orders of the dictator Francisco Franco in 1940 and opened in 1958. The 150-metre-high (500 feet) cross is constructed of stone. Beneath the valley floor lie the remains of 40,000 (33,800 republicans) victims, though the remains of the dictator and Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera (A Falangist hero) are no longer there. The complex also has a Benedictine Abbey, and a guest house.

“Sur le Pont d'Avignon" ("On the Bridge of Avignon") is a French song about a dance performed on the Pont d'Avignon (officially Pont Saint-Bénézet) that dates back to the 15th century. The dance actually took place under the bridge of the picture and not on the bridge However, I couldn’t organise the dancers.

Al fresco means outside, especially of food and eating lunch or dinner. This is a typical Parisian scene thought the establishment pictured has an Italian flavour.
