The D600 has arrived

Postby gstark on Thu Sep 13, 2012 3:22 pm

Seriously.

The presser just came in, pretty well confirming all the rumoured specs, and with - wait for it - local availability from next Tuesday, September 18.

No pricing in the presser, so I've asked for that.

http://mynikonlife.com.au/gear/digital-slr-cameras/d600

a few of the items different from the earlier rumours:

5.5 fps
39 point AF with Multi-CAM 4800, 9 cross-type with seven points that are compatible with f/8
Viewfinder coverage (FX: 100%, DX: 97%) - same as D800
Viewfinder Magnification 0.7x - same as D800

Max shutter speed is 1/4000 (which is a step down compared to D7000's or D700's 1/8000)
Flash sync speed is 1/200 (can go to 1/250 with reduced range) (again annoying compared to D7000's 1/250)

Bracketing is only 3 frames (unlike 9 on D800) - similar to D7000 - but can do 3EV steps

Vanbar are listing it for $2564 http://www.vanbar.com.au/catalogue/product.php?id=79365

Ted's don't have it listed as yet

Looks like the Australian Tax is back.

With a vengeance.

AFAIC, those prices are way too hot, given US pricing and the current exchange rate. If the retailers want to complain about people shopping overseas, I have less than no sympathy. Their business models are archaic.

There is no excuse for this whatsoever.

FYI - I was thinking about these two potential cons against the D600 (and I'm sure the strobists are going to really hate the second); but for the first I took a look at my own Lightroom library and out of the 57,500 images in my library only 27 had shutter speeds faster than 1/4000 (& 17 of those were at 1/5000 so close enough) and I had no "keepers" at 1/8000 and even if I only consider the images I've taken with my D7000 (which supports 1/8000) that's still 37,000 images.

Lightroom itself does it easily - just select "All Photographs" under Catalog (if you want to match across all the photos) and then in the Library Filter bar hit "Metadata" and then in the pulldown menu in that bar select "Exposure Info" and you can see/select columns with subtotals for each of Focal Length, ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed.

since everyone is banging on about prices ... DD has it preordered for 2099 which sounds more sensible even if it is grey.

Their (non)reaction has been a marketing fiasco.

When the likes of Thom Hogan and other reputable industry commentators agree that there is an issue with a percentage of these expensive cameras and Nikon cannot even make a comment about it, I think many consumers would feel the same way as you.

agreed - but...

http://www.ryda.com.au/Nikon-D600-DSLR- ... 00body.htm $2,388.85
http://www.photocontinental.com.au/products/101102 $2399
http://www.cameras.net.au/ $2450
http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.a ... 1281_1.htm $2,479
http://www.vanbar.com.au/catalogue/product.php?id=79365 $2,574.00
http://www.digidirect.com.au/slr_camera ... amera_body $2599.00
http://www.teds.com.au/catalog/product/ ... d600-body/ $2699.95

So you should expect be able to negotiate Aus stock (with the 2 year warranty) for $23XX and maybe less - which gets a lot closer to the $2100

I'm keen for one but I expect I'll wait till after the reviews and more come out and I've actually tried using one (plus I've got to factor in a 16-35 and 24-70 or 24-120 :(). I kinda wouldn't expect similar AF issues to the D800 since this appears to use an upgraded version of the D7000's AF module and isn't spread nearly as wide as the D800's one goes to the left and right of the frame (and I believe it was those far left and right sensors at the boundaries which were the problem on the affected D800s) - but yes I'm wary enough of Nikon right now to wait and see.

Don't overlook the fact that US pricing is always quoted ex-tax. State taxes in the US are generally around 9%, but importing a D600 from the US would incur GST of 10% based upon the cost of $2100 plus whatever the shipping cost might be. That's at least $210. Thus your break-even/comparison point for direct importing will be around the $2350 mark, plus whatever the value of the local warranty might be for you.

While these prices are looking better than what we were seeing yesterday, I still think that this is a little more expensive than it should be.

The originally mooted US$1600 was about the right number, I think.

i have never ever been nervous about buying a nikon product. ever. and tbh i dont think i have ever even been nervous buying any product from a reputable company period. this is the first time ive ever hesitated cos of a known fault. that in and of itself is evidence of nikons abject failure to address what is clearly an issue. very disappointing.

DDP's in North Syd so their $2099 price is walk in and buy with no more to pay (http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/pro ... ly%29.html) (still grey market - although any warranty return would be local too in this case) - so currently they would be the reference grey benchmark - will be interesting to see where prices go after launch (e.g. HK pricing - at the moment their grey prices are higher than here)

NB: ECS are now down to $2385 http://www.cameras.net.au/product_info. ... cts_id=378

There is one driving feature for which I would consider upgrading to the D600 over the D7000 for....

wait for it.....

the finger grip! they have finally learned the error of their ways and made a proper curved finger grip which is harking back to the days of the D80.

this is one feature that I can see making a difference for me to make me take better pictures :rotfl2:

I've bought from both (and eglobal which seems to be the no frills arm of DWI if thats even possible) but only lenses and not a camera (or anything over $1K). I reckon they are all fine as long as you don't want any actual customer service either before or after sale.
