Lighting, particularly portrait lighting is a whole giant can of worms.
The best website I know looking at lighting (mainly flash) is David Hobby's Strobist site: http://strobist.blogspot.com/ In particular look at his lighting 101 (top right of the home page)
The best lighting book, or source of any kind for that matter,that I know is "Light Science & Magic" I bought mine in Dymocks but it shows up on all the usual online sources as well.
