I'm not sure yet but this might have been one of those things where the idea was good when I saw it but perhaps the execution not so much?

#1 Overall, I like it, but I find the very white tree in the background field left a bit of a distraction
#2. For this image I think I would prefer greater DOF.

Keep 'em coming!!!

Thanks Greg :) - with #2 I must admit I was trying to get the smallest DOF possible with my 70-300 (in this case f/4.5 @ 70mm).

Did you have a polariser on #1. Can't imagine how you got such a dark sky elsewise PS Great work as usual.

Ahhh - I cheated in PP :) since there wasn't any other Blue in the image I just went into the B&W Mix Panel in Lightroom after the main monochrome conversion and selected the Blue (and Aqua) channels and reduced them to near -100 and voila Black sky

and thanks (as usual :))...

Week 39

I've been away for a couple of weeks so I've missed doing some street photography...

I decided to go for a really long exposure architectural street image theme this week. This was taken with a 10 stop ND filter in the middle of the day to get a long enough exposure (2 minutes) to get some streaky cloud movement.

No critique today Rodney - just an observation.

If this site was to give a photographer of the year award, then you would most certainly win.

Your photographs are innovative, observant, creative, technically executed, awe inspiring plus many more.

What I'm seeing here, more than anything else, is the constant improvement in Rodney's imaging. I'm talking about his vision, his composition, and his post.

The ones he's posted over the last few weeks have been nothing short of spectacularly brilliant, and I think he's proving that it's by getting out and just shooting, you will improve every aspect of what you're doing.

Week 44

This first is a simple seen image - taken looking down Albion Pl off George St in the city.

Image

I couldn't really decide between the next two so I've included both - I'd been meaning to visit these for some time since I'd heard they were back (my wife actually told me). My goal was to shoot some images on an overcast day with clouds moving quickly overhead and use the ten stop ND to have streaky skies. I hadn't actually been there so didn't realise it was such a narrow canyon which might not have suited my idea anyway. As it was it ended up being a clear blue sky day with intense light shining down this narrow corridor - didn't use the tripod or ND. This is Angel Pl sort of between George and Pitt streets in the city towards Circular Quay just past Martin Place.

Week 45

I'm unsure which of the following two I like best - the one with or without my daughter included - I'm not sure yet whether she adds or detracts from the overall image

Saw this row of peaked roofs and knew I had to take a shot

Rodney,

Where's the multiple exposure version, where she's in three or four different locations, with the same pose? I'd love to see this done using in-camera ME - bugger photoshop; that's for wimps.

You gotta try the multi exposure idea though

I'm sure you're aware of this, but just in case you're not ... do take care to note that the total accumulated EV for the ME image should still be the same as for a single shot. So, for three exposures, 1/3 exposure for each, four exposures, 1/4 each. There will be a side effect of some transparency occurring on your daughter as you do this, with more exposures meaning greater apparent transparency. That may, or may not, be a desirable outcome.

What might also be worthwhile with this location and idea is to visit it at night, long exposure on the major site, and pop a focused flash towards your daughter in the various sub-locations that you choose.

Have fun.

Yep was aware about the combined exposure, thanks. It's funny, I was thinking only this morning of doing exactly the same thing to get around having an indistinct human subject (albeit with the remotely triggered flash and softbox close to the subject) and almost spot light each location with a fast shutter to avoid much spill or ambient on the general scene.

Out of the two, I prefer the first one however the selective colouring doesn't add anything to the story or vision.

The second one doesn't grab me and I can see what you were trying for, but what I'd suggest is to retake that and time it when there's a group of indifferent or unhappy people around in the background. It would be a great image for the expression, "a rose among the thorns".
