Flash brackets advantages? Should I buy one?

I am currently arranging to purchase a SB800 for my D70.

I may be doing some portrait work and assisting in weddings in the future.

I intended just to plug it into the hotshoe but I have now read a bit on flash brackets.

What are the advantages of using flash brackets?

What are the recommendation for exactly what I should buy and from where?

What other accessories would I need to go with it.

Apart from it, you'll need the L bracket or lens plates depend on what lens you have.
